Fort Hood

As I'm positive everyone's heard of this tragedy, please keep the soldiers and their families in your thoughts and prayers. Also, kudos to the Police Sergeant who, though wounded herself, was able to take this nutcase down.
According to the report I heard, she responded and on arrival fired to get his attention from a soldier he had just shot. In trading shots, she was hit and went down, but was able to return fire, doing the same to the gunman. The report goes on to say she is a firearms instructor for the police agency. While some may ask why she didn't shoot to kill, there are reasons not to. First, law enforcement training is to shoot to disable, so as to end the incident. Her strikes did just that. Secondly, as many of us have heard over and over, his actions may have been intentionally performed in an attempt to become a martyr and go to his reward as such. By not killing him, his objection was not met and he is a failure. Thus, he can go to hell where he belongs.
Whether her intentions were in not making killing shots, or simply trying to take him out in any way possible, she is a hero and deserves any and all recognition she gets for it. The doctor interviewed said her only concern on coming to after surgery, was for others. May she, by the grace of God, receive a full recovery.

Forum: 2009

St Patrick's Church, LIC

I was at Sunnyside Yard on Saturday 10/10/2009 on railroad business, so I decided to walk over to St Patrick's Church in Long Island City for the 5 PM Saturday evening vigil Mass. St Patrick's was the parish of my grandfather, uncle and aunt after they moved to LIC from the Bronx circa 1961; my parish was MPB.

I was quite surprised to see no more than 40 people attending the Mass. Far less than 10% of the available seats were occupied by worshippers. The celebrant, a priest of Filipino ancestry, preached a good homily and worked without the help of an alter server. A piano player and a singer provided enjoyable liturgical music.

I could not help notice how the paint was visibily peeling from the walls and ceiling in certain locations. The second collection was to help pay their heating bills for the upcoming winter.

After the Mass, I took the opportunity to chat with the Priest. He said this small turnout was rather typical attendance for the 5 PM Saturday vigil Mass, but there was a better turnout for the Spanish and Fillipino Masses on Sunday. When I acquired about his parishoners of European ancestry, he said most have passed away or moved away. I also inquired about the 16 story residential tower about 2 blocks away and the "boutique" Hotel Verve caddy-corner from the church, which seem very out of place from the LIC I remember in the 1960s and early 1970s; he said he thought they were the product of changes in zoning ordinances and some new investment in Long Island City.

Forum: 2009

Oh no.....as a kid growing up in NY in the 60s, EVERYBODY loved Soupy!
MCHS / StJP from the Hell Gate Bridge

One of the more unusual views of MCHS / StJP is from the window of a train on the Queens approach to the Hell Gate Bridge. Some one recently sent me the link to an amateur video of segments of someone's recent trip from Newark NJ to Boston MA on Amtrak. The beginning of the video is shot thru the window on the north side of the Queens approach, looking down at Astoria. You can clearly see the end of the subway (elevated line) at Ditmars Boulevard station and then you can see the school itself a few blocks north of you. The remainder of the video includes some scenic shots crossing rivers and alongside the New England coastline in CT and RI on the way to Boston.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4YALRqx_sI

Forum: 2009

There was a bomb scare and a bus, but this definitely wasn't "Speed."

Charleston police shut down and surrounded part of the Citadel Mall parking lot for nearly three hours Thursday morning after a man left a "suspicious" suitcase on a CARTA bus.

Members of the department's bomb squad, dressed in heavy protective gear, eventually boarded the bus near Orleans Road and removed the soft-sided black suitcase from the bus about 12:30 p.m.

Inside they found clothes, hangers and some loose change, said Charles Francis, public information officer.
Francis said police later spoke with the man who owned the suitcase. He intentionally left the bag on the bus so he could run some errands. The man knew the bus' schedule and planned to pick it up later, Francis said.

I've decided to post, from time to time, happenings that make this state a special place to live. Think about it, this moron left the suitcase on the bus, because he knew the schedule and figured he could pick it up later.
Forum: 2009
