I grew up listening to my folks' Big Band 78's, and when the Dupree's hit, I thought it was a GREAT melding of the best of then - current music with the best of the recent past.  I really was (am!) a big fan of Joey Vann & The Dupree's, but right now, can not recall if they had another hit album after "Have You Heard?" (if I do recall correctly, "You Belong To Me" was their first) -- but sitting right here at my desk in the office, I think I can recall the exact play list & sequence of each cut on both sides of that album that's sitting at home, in my record cabinet....

How many of the "original" group claimed to be there?  I saw them recently on a PBS pledge-drive "Doo-Wop" special, and they brought down the house....

Wich I had been there in Astoria Park -- sounds spectacular!!

Do you know what other concerts will be held over the summer.  I want to get tickets for a Doo Wop concert at Bethel Woods in August if we are home. Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge are on the list of headliners.

Unfortunately, many of the Do-Wop Groups performing
today do not contain many of their original members.
Since their hayday was in the 1950's and early 1960's
that would put them in the late 60s to the 80s age
range.  Many of the groups we see on the PBS specials
are composed of members from other groups which
now have joined together under another group's name,
or are simply replacements of the original members.
A friend of mine is a member of the "The Chords" ("Sha-
Boom") but they are not the originals: only one is
still alive and is retired: he is in his mid-80s.

Kathi, I don't actually recall any of them saying they were originals.....the did say 3 originals have passed on.

They put on an excellent show.....their top two songs of course, and they sang some songs from their "Movie" album, had the crowd hopping with Lionel Ricthie's "All Night Long", and did a fabulous rendition of Seal's "I Believe I Can Fly".  One of them came into the audience during "Just a Gigilo".....very, very entertaining.

Upcoming concerts:

7/17             1910 Fruitgum Company
7/24              Rockplosion
7/31              Joe Battaglia and the New York Big Band
8/7                Joey Dee and the Starliters
8/14              Come Together - A tribute to the Beatles
8/21              Gary U.S. Bonds

Jim,

I couldn't agree with you more. I hate it when PBS says that this or that is a certain Doo-Wop group & they obviously aren't. P.J. Lubinsky (sp?) who producers these shows (& can't be any more than 40 years old) acts like he grew up listening to them & that these are the original groups.

A woman I knew, who had been Go-Go Dancer at the Peppermint Lounge when Joey Dee got started there, wound up as the 'assistant' to the president of a very well known, and very big, money management firm. She must have been very talented.
