MERRY CHRISTMAS!
*Twas the month before Christmas*
*When all through our land,*
*Not a Christian was praying*
*Nor taking a stand.*
*See the PC Police had taken away,*
*The reason for Christmas - no one could say.*
*The children were told by their schools not to sing,*
*About Shepherds and Wise Men and Angels and things.*
*It might hurt people's feelings, the teachers would say*
* December 25th is just a "Holiday ".*

*Yet the shoppers were ready with cash, checks and credit*
*Pushing folks down to t he floor just to get it!*
*CDs from Madonna, an X BOX, an I-pod*
*Something was changing, something quite odd! *
*Retailers promoted Ramadan and Kwanzaa*
*In hopes to sell books by Franken & Fonda.*
*As Targets were hanging their trees upside down*
* At Lowe's the word Christmas - was no where to be found.*
*At K-Mart and Staples and Penny's and Sears*
*You won't hear the word Christmas; it won't touch your ears.*

*Inclusive, sensitive, Di-ver-si-ty*
*Are words that were used to intimidate me.*
*Now Daschle, Now Darden, Now Sharpton, Wolf Blitzen*
*On Boxer, on Rather, on Kerry, on Clinton !*
*At the top of the Senate, there arose such a clatter*
*To eliminate Jesus, in all public matter.*
*And we spoke not a word, as they took away our faith*
; * Forbidden to speak of salvation and grace*

*The true Gift of Christmas was exchanged and discarded*
*The reason for the season, stopped before it started.*
*So as you celebrate "Winter Break" under your "Dream Tree"*
*Sipping your Starbucks, listen to me.*
*Choose your words carefully, choose what you say*

*Shout MERRY CHRISTMAS,
not Happy Holiday!*

I heard last night there is a Christmas Store at the Pathmark Shopping center at Atlantic and 92 Street that sells the upside down "Family Tree" .

Terry,

I can't understand how you could reconcile separation of church and state with religious celebrations in Public schools.

The city of Boston in '05 called their official decorated tree a holiday tree, and the subsequent response from the Nova Scotian tree farmer who donated the tree was that he would rather have put the tree in a wood chipper than have it named a "holiday" tree. (Excerpt from Wikipedia)

Barry, you talkin' about the poem? The poem is an e-mail copy and paste.

December 25 IS CHRISTMAS!!!!! That's that!!!  Has been for almost forever.  I don't understand how it can be taken away and declared just a "holiday".  Or how people can think of doing such a thing and thinking it's ok.  I can't even put my emotions into words when it comes to this and other attempts at removal of God and Jesus!!!!!  It actually enrages me......    and believe me, I'm slow to anger.

I wish everyone a Merry Christmas.......'tis the season!

God bless!

Reading over this thread it seems to me that we’ve the ‘traditional’ or true meaning of Christmas and then a new secular ‘meaning’. I don’t think the secular and misconstrued meaning of the word has so much evolved in the normal process of language, as various ‘special interests’ groups have foisted it, sometimes intentionally sometimes not, on society, especially the last half century or so.

Merchants would seem to have been the first special interest group, possibly motivated by sharing the joyous season itself as much as by profiting from it. (The road to hell is paved with such.) Easiest to commercialize within the festive atmosphere was the gift giving of the Three Kings, but the temporal aspects of the day were still subordinate to the religious. In the last 60 years or so have come the ‘ad-men’, and no doubt about their motivation; nor unfortunately, about their impact. Once the festive, religious spirit of Christmas was adequately usurped and commercialized the religious significance attached to the feast was seen as ‘restricting the potential market’, and so an impediment to be overcome. Christians were all to happy to share the joy of Christmas with others, not realizing the true Reason For the Season, was being de-emphasized in the process. Madison Avenue then advanced not only the commercialization of the birth of Christ, but the secularization of the holiday by removing as much religious significance as they could,  more Rudolph and less Redeemer. I doubt it was so much an anti-Christian movement as merely marketing with no thought given to the effect on society – unintended consequences.

More recently secular progressives have launched an attack on Christmas as part of their goal to remove ‘religion’ from the public square. Though seemingly, to me anyway, only certain established religions are under attack. I don’t think that can be denied. Seculars are even claiming that some are now trying to install their own religious views in government. History shows this government to have been founded on Judeo Christian mores, those principles, whether called religious tenants, morals, ethical guides or whatever are ensconced in our society and government. The battle is not against the encroachment of religious symbolism into, but for the expulsion and exclusion from public life.

All Christians should be concerned, as Terry is, about the continued denigration of the true meaning of Christmas. As Terry said “People try to change the definition of words to so they can twist things.” There are innumerable examples slang changing by popular use, but there are also examples of the distortion of words to advance particular agendas. Christmas has and is suffering such an assault, as has “separation of Church and State,” and most recently “marriage.”

If you don't know or won't accept what Christmas is and has been for over 2000 years, then have yourself a wonderful Festivus or whatever. Just don't try to replace Christmas with,  or equate Christmas to other celebration.

A reminder that it's 19 days (and counting down) until this person arrives.

Maybe it goes against what we've said lately about the lack of religion in Christmas.

But the picture is in the spirit of a simpler time before Christmas was turned into a commercial free-for-all.

Neither the government nor the market is the steward of Christianity. Christians are.

An so we are. Trying to retain what has become tradition, for what we cherished in our childhood for our grandchildren.

one of my favorite Christmas memories was going out into a private forest under Mt. Hood and sawing down a Scotch pine.

So, did you call it a Christmas Tree or a Holiday Tree?

Janet,

No one is removing God or Jesus from your life or your church. We just want to keep people religions out of purely public institutions. Besides, a Christmas tree was just a Solstice tree before some people adopted or 'stole' it to make it a Christmas tree.
It is the Christian Political Correctness police that make me want to say Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas. They make such an issue of it. The sword slices both ways.
All you have to do to see what the lack of an establishment clause is like is to go to Saudi Arabia and put up a Christmas tree. (or Solstice Tree)
Religion is private and personal...not a function of government.

Barry
