Perhaps the 9 hour figure comes from confusion with the IDL. (Remember most people still think the attack on the PI et al. happened a full day after Pearl).

The number came from the Ken Burns "War" which also mentioned the day was the same (International Dateline issue).

I agree with your point about American reticence about war. In retrospect that was tragic given Hitlers plans for us and his amazing corruption of modern society and culture.

I think that ANY attack on Pearl would have been sufficient to switch American opinion. If I were FDR and strategizing, I would have seen an enemy that had overwhelming superiority demonstrated in the field of battle, our unpreparedness, and not been willing to chance the loss of any critical component of battle.

You are right about the Battleships. Interesting that our former President Reagan saw to waste tax payers money equipping the New Jersey in a multi-billion dollar waste of money.

WWII showed that being the aggressor has huge advantage at the beginning but in the end the occupiers are eventually defeated. We should have noticed that before Viet Nam and Iraq.

Barry,

Regarding Ken Burns' "War".  Did you catch the part where they were interviewing the former GI from Conneticut & he told about the German they captured who spoke perfect English. The German asked where the GI was from & he told him. The German then mentioned that it was the confluence of 2 rivers (The ex-GI told Ken Burns that one of the rivers was really only a stream & is really not known outside of the immediate vicinity). He asked the German how he knew that & he replied he learned it in school. The GI said what was he studying. The German replied he was sent to a military school to prepare for the administration. (In other words, the occupation of the U.S.). I'm surprised I had never heard of Hitler's plans with respect to the occupation of the U.S. until "War". Scary, isn't it?

I still think Burns might have been confused (or at least not made it clear) about M doing NOTHING for a number of hours after the attack on the PI began.

Ken

I haven't gotten that far in the series...but very chilling when considered. Stretched so thin the Germans would have needed a lot of collaborators to pull that one off but the experience of the Russians in the Eastern Block showed that was possible.

This series seems to have more real informatin than all the other documentaries I have seen put together...

Ken, I remember that sequence from the series. Yes, very chilling that they had been training to take over the US for many years.

Interesting to see on an another recent documentary about the Kennedy's that Joe Kennedy was one of those who was probably ready to step in on the German side -- given the opportunity.

Then there's alway Philip Roth's "The Plot Against America" if you want to get a glimpse into the "what if . . ." nature of this.

It certainly isn't a pleasant thought that Americans could become a Nazi subject but then Germany was a positive, liberal, educated, modern society before the Nazis took over. On the flip side there was a lot of Nazi sympathizers in the British aristocracy before they were attacked. There were the German-American Bunds in the USA as well. Worldwide open Antisemitism was tolerable. So the plausibility was definitely there. Remember also that we learn our acceptable ethic from the society we grow up in. This is why former communists countries like East German and Russia struggle to make tolerance, capitalism and freedom work. The point being that after a generation or two raised under such a Nazi regime, their ethic is the norm.
