And here we are:  the great winter baseball debating
society!!!!!

How about: Delgado at 1st; Maz at 2nd (trade Reyes to Colorado); A-Rod at short; Wright at 3rd?
That way, the fans would BOO almost the entire infield!!

We actually started it on the baseball page. Your right we should close it down over there and pick it up here. The first salvo was Reyes to Minnesota for Santana then sigh ARod to play short !!!

The thing is that Santana is off the market.... the politicians in Minnesota are sort of directly the team (Twins) not wo trade Santana, as they are building a new stadium and it is being built with government funds (not private money like the Mets and Yankees), and it is going to be important that the team remain competitive to justify this expense.

I remember when the Mariners were lobbying to get out of the King dome and to assure attendance figures for a new park ( Safe co ) they claimed Randy , Griffey and ARod were off the market. Roger Maris homerun king and two time M.V.P. was untouchable somehow ended up in a Cardinals uniform. Maurey Wills playing second for the Pirates , etc etc etc,,,,,,, Jim Thome "Mr Cleveland"  Frank Thomas "Mr Whitesox " all gone for the right deal . If the Twins could improve with two or three starting players for Santana the "off the market" tag would be a thing of the past. Reyes , one of those young center fielders ( maybe both ) (because Torre Hunter could be gone) that filled in so well last season (  who will be sitting  three more years behind Beltran ) and maybe a  Castro for some back up and DHing ( he can hit ) and Santana a once every 5 day player could be available. I'm pretty sure with a young guy like him you don't hold the rotation or jiggle it to be sure all his starts are home (5-9 at home) (10-4 on the road)  . 15 home starts !!!!
Sure he's a two time Cy Young winner but at last years 15 - 13  I'm sure the right deal to help strengthen the entire club for 81 home dates is doable.

It looks as if Tom Glavine will decide to play in 2008:
the Mets and the Braves are his top probabilities.
Even though he lost his last 3 games, he was 13-7 this
year.  The Mets should resign him, and pick up
Curt Schilling.  Since starting pitchers are expected to
go only 5 or 6 innings, age is becoming less important:
smarts and know-how dominate, rather than complete
game staying power.  A rotation of Martinez, Glavine,
Schilling, Perez and Maine would be very interesting.
As for the bullpen, the Mets need to find some long
relief, so they can dump Mota.

Trade wagner for some young arms and make Pedro the closer. You want Schilling ? Maybe as the eight inning set up man. Then you could put Heilmann in the rotation. Starting pitching needs to get younger not older.

While younger arms have more pitching speed,
and (in theory) more staying power, they are
usually unproven major league talents.  It is one
of the reasons teams trade several minor leaguers
for an established talent.  Sometimes it works
(Piazza for 3 minors) and sometimes it doesn't
work. But give me proven track records everytime,
as long as they can do the job.

Janet you always bring a smile to my face. The Golden Gloves are awarded to the winners of the annual amatuer boxing contest that takes place in many cities . The Rawlings Gold Glove Awards are for the best defensive players in baseball. Although there are quite a few fans who would have loved to knock Beltran out at the end of last season his skills  and his shotgun arm made him deserving of the award. Wonder if he has a left hook ?

Alright! Up for discussion, Bond's indictment and the return of A-Rod. I'm not in favor of either!

Folks, you are not going to believe this!!!

The Monday, November 26th, 2007 New York Post has reported the lastest contract terms for Alex Rodriguez
(subject to his passing a physical):

A ten year $275 million contract with a maximum bonus of $30 million, which means he could make $305 million.

Now get this: here is the list of the bonus possibilities:

1. $6 million for tying Willie Mays in lifetime HRs.
Mays has 660, Rodriguez has 518.

2. Another $6 million for tying Babe Ruth (714 HRs)

3. Another $6 million for tying Hank Aaron (755 HRs)

4. Another $6 million for tying Barry Bonds (now at
    762 HRs).

That only adds up to $24 million, you say??

5. Believe it or not, Rodriguez will receive another
$6 million for breaking Bond's record.  That's right,
he will get $6 million for hitting just one more HR!!

Two observations:

1. The Steinbrenner family have lost their collective minds.

2. Any Yankee fan that pays to see Rodriguez hit these
    HRs has lost his/her mind.
