My theory on Hevesi......he'll either step down or be asked to resign & another Democrat will replace him.  He did receive 67% of the vote...I watched that race very carefully.  I know little Cuomo (as I like to call him) he is a very close family friend.  I'm sure he'll do the right thing......

Just my two cents worth on both issues....After working for the PD I went to work for an insurance company.  Flat our behind the scenes the insurance industry is the driving force behind the anti gay union issue.   Take Prudential for example.   They insure in one way or another 60 million customers.  Behind the catholic church they are the second largest holder of Real Estate in the world.  They are so dead set against covering significant others and unmarried couples because  the risk factors of huge claims that they are withdrawing from the health insurance market. They know they are going to take a big hit on this.   Watch what happens when the government forces the companies to extend coverage to unmarried partners. We are going to have to pay for it. The all ready astronomical rates are going to skyrocket.   There is a reason the rates in NY and California versus the rates in Idaho are so different. Its all based on a claim to income ratio.  I have lots of gay friends and am a  firm believer in equality across the board.  Its really an economic issue and the insurance lobby and contributions make the oil industry look like cheapskates. They are really big money.  RE Alan Hevesi...what's wrong with this picture?  His drivers were getting paid better than 100,000 per year!!!what the heck!!!Nice work if you can get it.  LOL.  The drivers jobs for politicians have always been a political plum and a reward for the party faithful's relatives.  The NYS pension system is one of the largest and most solvent in the world and most state workers voted for him by the thousands because of it..  No one  much cares if Hevesi's wife got a ride around by chauffeur occasionally.  You watch it will become a non issue

Isn't it interesting how much insurance companies try NOT to deliver the service they have been paid for. One could also argue that the cost of coverage should represent the costs and they are protecting against costs. But should they be allowed to avoid risk by denying coverage to people based on thier racial make up and the accompanying actuarial risks that vary by race? No one would support this so why is marital status an issue? Like marriage, it is all a civil contract.
Maybe this is a failure of the capitalist system for health care. Insurance companies are incentised to offer the least service not the most. Insurance regulation has been the balance weight to keep them honoring thier contracts....
Something to think about......

Absolutely.   Take most HMO's for example the primary care physician actually gets year end bonus money if he meets  certain cost containment guidelines.  Now in New York the Insurance laws are very consumer oriented but lo and behold HMO's are somehow not classified as insurance  therefor not subject to the same rules.  Its a question of semantic's but the implications are lots of services are not covered or your Dr doesn't send you for all the right tests because he has a financial incentive to save the HMO money.  They get paid a monthly rate per patient and the rate is higher if they control costs.  I had to change Dr's when I got my most recent job as my old doc was not on my new plan.  When I first started with my new MD I got in a number of huge fights with him over why he was changing the way I have been treated for  years.  He had no reason to switch what was working other wise. My wife was mortified when I called him a horrible doctor.  I had been recovering from being run over by a garbage truck and 3 months in the hospital with no food or water other than an IV.I had a lot of operations and  I had a lot of medical issues and still do. I had a lawyer who was handling my liability claim who actually had to call the doctor for me and advise him that we were planning to name him in a suit unless he continued to  treat me the way my prior doctor had.  Once the lawyer got involved the doctor changed his act and I have actually become so friendly with him that I recently renovated his house and do the routine maintenance  on his office.

I worked for three companies (AT&T, LU and VZ) since 1998 and all included medical coverage for domestic partners (same sex only). I thought all companies provided coverage for domestic partners.
