There was a bomb scare and a bus, but this definitely wasn't "Speed."

Charleston police shut down and surrounded part of the Citadel Mall parking lot for nearly three hours Thursday morning after a man left a "suspicious" suitcase on a CARTA bus.

Members of the department's bomb squad, dressed in heavy protective gear, eventually boarded the bus near Orleans Road and removed the soft-sided black suitcase from the bus about 12:30 p.m.

Inside they found clothes, hangers and some loose change, said Charles Francis, public information officer.

Francis said police later spoke with the man who owned the suitcase. He intentionally left the bag on the bus so he could run some errands. The man knew the bus' schedule and planned to pick it up later, Francis said.

I've decided to post, from time to time, happenings that make this state a special place to live. Think about it, this moron left the suitcase on the bus, because he knew the schedule and figured he could pick it up later.

I couldn't make this stuff up if I tried.

A guy was driving down a road near Charleston on Thursday. A dog ran out in front of his car and was struck. The guy does the right thing. He stops, gets out of his car and checks on the dog. The dog is in obvious distress, dragging it's hind legs. The driver stops a passing vehicle and asks if they have a gun, he's going to put the dog down. No gun, go figure. So he goes to his car, removes a machete and a hammer and goes to work trying to dispatch the dog. The dog owner looks out the window of his house and sees the guy going to work on his dog with the machete and hammer. He procedes to go outside, take the hammer and machete from the original driver and goes to work on him, with said implements. The end result is, the driver is in the hospital with multiple skull fractures, the dog owner is in jail and the dog was put down at the office of a local vet.
I love this stae, more to follow soon, I'm sure.

Are these stories in the local paper?  I can be somewhat naive so I'm not sure if these are true stories or not.

I've only been in South Carolina once (Charleston) and it seemed quite civilized at the time!

Looks like Bill's stories could be found in any local newspaper.

I've no doubt of that Bill.
It's that what ever stories you post in/from SC could happen else where.

Same from here Bill.  Be it South Carolina, South Jersey, South Chicago, or even Southern California, we're akin to Custer at the Bighorn.  Only we're surrounded by maniacs, instead of Sioux!
But, yeah, I'm still looking to retire there!  Three years and four months to go!

Looking forward to you coming down, Bob.

Russel, you really think many people leave a suitcase on a NYC bus because they know the schedule and figure they can pick it up later??

I had a customer who left her large bag in a subway mezzazine at 7 Ave/Flatbush in Brooklyn once. A Transit cop saw it and went the whole 9 yards of calling it in as a possible terrorist plot. (See Something? Say Something!) She retrieved her bag before the Bomb Squad arrived. But only after first spending 5 minutes yelling at the Transit cop about it.

Another time at 63/Lexington a womeless woman wanted to leave her shopping bags in front of the booth. I couldn't come out of the booth and watch them. I told her that but she decided to leave them there anyway. Before she left the station I told her to hurry back because I might watch someone walk off with her bags. She was gone about 10 minutes and someone indeed walk off with them before she returned.

Russell,

Maybe if these posters had been there at that time, she would not have been so confident in leaving her things behind:

http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/10/21/new.york.subway.ads/index.html

Only in NY!!!

Well, maybe not..... I could see that also happening in LA, fersure, and maybe San Fran or Oakland, or.......!

Boeing just announced that the second line for the 787 will be in Charleston.  As far as I know that is Boeing's first commercial assembly venture (not counting heritage McDonnell Douglas aircraft) outside of Puget Sound.  Should help the local economy.

More SC GOP Family Values: Official Caught With Stripper in Cemetery

More family values: ex-S.C. GOP official caught with stripper in cemetery

By Adam Beam | The State
Columbia's assistant city manager for public safety says the city will not formally investigate an incident Monday involving former state Assistant Attorney General Roland Corning.

Corning, who is a former state legislator, left his job with the attorney general's office after he was pulled over Monday on suspicion of illegal activity. When he was pulled over, Corning identified himself as an employee with the attorney general's office and was not charged with a crime.

The city's Mike King said after reviewing the incident with Police Chief Tandy Carter, "there is no indication of any wrongdoing of the officer."

Officer Mike Wines, whose wife works in the attorney general's office, stopped Corning Monday after witnessing his car pull into a secluded spot in Elmwood Cemetery in downtown Columbia.

Corning was in the car with an 18-year-old employee of Platinum Plus Gentlemen's Club, Wines reported. After receiving conflicting stories from Corning and the woman, Wines searched Corning’s car and found some sex toys and sex enhancement drug.

Wines said Corning told him he had a prescription for the drug. He and the woman were later released.
