In an exclusive interview with James Morgan, Artistic Director of the York Theatre Company (in front of the Belasco Theatre before "Dracula: The Musical") this reporter has learned that "The Musical of Musicals: The Musical" has again been extended (to October 2nd) and is now in search of a theatre for a commercial run (i.e., profit making and open ended). The original cast will continue to perform (including, of course, composer and actress Joanne Bogart, MC 71).

"The Musical of Musicals: The Musical" ended it's run at
the York Theatre Company on October 2nd, 2004 logging in
200+ performances.

The next step for Joanne Bogart's musical is reopening at
another Off Broadway theatre for an open-ended run. Watch
this space, in the near future, for details!! This reporter
has also learned through extremely reliable sources that
productions of "The Musical of Musicals: The Musical" are
also in the planning stages for Los Angeles and London!!

I kid you not and you read it first here!!

Hey, Sammy

I usually go to Playbill.com AFTER I read it here first, to see if they caught up with you!

I wouldn't mind going to LA to see the show, it's less of a drive than to NYC! But then, who's in the cast?

Hi Pete,

The Los Angeles and London productions are just in the
planning stages. There are no definate dates or casting.

The next New York run will be with the original cast (including, of course, Joanne). Thus, on the absolute
theorum that you can't be in two or three places at
once, if the New York run is still going on when Los
Angeles and London open, the casting could be anyone
from unknowns to major theatrical players.

Right now, your guess is as good as mine!!

Musical of Musicals—The Musical! to Reopen at Dodger Stages
By Andrew Gans
10 Dec 2004

The much-acclaimed Off-Broadway musical The Musical of Musicals — The Musical!, which ended a record-breaking run at the York Theatre Company in October, will have a new life at the Dodger Stages in 2005.

The musical, the longest-running show in the York's 35-year history, will begin previews at Dodger Stages, Stage Five, Feb. 2, 2005, with an official opening Feb. 10. Featuring music by Eric Rockwell, lyrics by Joanne Bogart and a book by Rockwell and Bogart, The Musical of Musicals is a satire of various musical theatre genres. One story is played five times, each in the style of a different musical theatre composer or team, including Rodgers and Hammerstein and Stephen Sondheim. Producers are the York Theatre Company, Melanie Herman, W. David McCoy and James Morgan.

Directed and choreographed by Pamela Hunt, the show's original cast will play Stage Five, including Craig Fols, Lovette George and authors Rockwell and Bogart. The design team comprises Mary Jo Dondlinger (lighting), John Carver Sullivan (costumes) and Morgan (set design).

About the show's reopening, producer Melanie Herman said in a statement, "I’m pleased to have found a permanent home for Musicals. Audiences have been begging us to bring the show back; in fact, many audience members returned multiple times to see it. We are thrilled that the show will now reach the audience it deserves, and are looking forward to a wonderful run at the Dodger Stages."

The Musical of Musicals — The Musical! was nominated for a 2004 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Musical, and the CD is available in stores on the Jay Records label.

Dodger Stages is located at 340 West 50th Street. Tickets, priced $55-$59.50, are available by callling (212) 239-6200.

"The Musical of Musicals: The Musical" has just been nominated

for a 2005 Drama League Award in the category of "Distinguished Production of a Musical."  The Drama League Award is the theatre's

oldest award, predating the Tony by 12 years.

Jim,

Not having had the pleasure of seeing the show, the CD we received at the Reunion is EXCELLENT.  The performances and caricatures of the composers' styles and characters are right on the money; the music, arrangements, and original script/lyrics keep it tight but do not short-change us on the sheer enjoyment of the show.  You do have to listen closely to get all the "in" jokes and observations, so listen to the CD more than once.  It's good to have the script and lyrics in the liner notes to follow along.  Also, if you live in a car culture like I do, I don't recommend putting this on your car's CD, like I did, I think I ran a stop sign (?) or something while enjoying "Aspects of Junica".

Went to see "The Musical of Musicals" yesterday - what a great show!  No sets and minimal props, so the cast carries the whole thing and they carry it wonderfully.  Witty and tuneful, they've really captured the essence of each style.  Any of you in the metropolitan area should catch this show while you still have the chance.

I also got to say a quick hello to Joanne as she dashed off between shows.  She's done some great work here - they deserve to win everything they're nominated for.
