I haven't posted in years but if you want to read a great book about poverty and growing up in the projects of South Boston read All Souls by Michael Patrick MacDonald.

I can vouch for ALL SOULS being an excellent read.  Read it several years ago.

Will have to look into Shusaku Endo - am totally unfamiliar with him but it sounds like something I would enjoy.

Great suggestions.

My wife tells me all about how a family of 8 kids grew up in the Mets. Does that count?

Terrance, I guess that eight kids growing up in the mets or four kids growing up in a railroad flat in Long Island City or growing up in Queensbridge, Astoria, Woodside or Ravenswood houses can qualify as life experience but he put it into words and made you think. The other issue is that his experiences take place in the late 70's and 80"s and not the 50's and 60's and early 70's.

I remember as a child how many of my friends and neighbors had very little growing up and were troubled by drugs and violence. I would need more fingers then I have, to count the number of people I knew who died of unnatural causes way before their time.

Just finished "The Lost Symbol" by Dan Brown. I felt like he could have lost the last 50-75 pages and nobody would have missed them.

Last week I purchased a copy of "The Apostles" by Pope Bendeict XVI.  It documents his talks on the subject during public audience at The Vatican.

About a year ago, I purchased a copy of his book "Jesus of Nazareth", which I found hard to read and comprehend.  I don't know if it was the translation from German to English, or if the theology was just too deep for me.

I made notes in it when I was working for Transit.
With a regular 5 boro atlas
I'd look up where a hospital, precinct, museum was
and write down how to get there by mass transit
and refer to it
when a person asked me directions.

Just finished reading "South of Broad", by Conroy.  Good book and a fair depiction of Charleston and the people. I haven't read any other Conroy books and probably won't. Read this one because I love the town.

We have a very small public library, under 900sq.ft. They provide online access to many in the community on 2 computers.

I'm reading "Local Wonders-Seasons in the Bohemian Alps" by Ted Kooser.  Kooser beautifully describes his memories and current activities living in Nebraska.  Beautiful language.  An incredible memory and a talent for description.  He was Poet Laureate of the US a few years ago.  A retired insurance executive.
