Although I appreciated the sentiment in the "Happy Thanksgiving" e-mail, being referred to as an alumna of "St. John's Prep" just did not sit right with me. I went to Mater Christi. I guess that, although it technically no longer exists, it does for us.
Is that being too picayune? I guess..............

Interesting. Mine was addressed to "To Our Dear Alumni," and did not specify the school.

Yes - you are correct; it was not in the body of the note. It was just sent from St. John's Prep Alumni. I guess it just bothered me. I'm over it now  but I guess it struck a nerve. |

Hi Kathy,
I received the email Tuesday and was also bothered by the greeting "To Our Dear Alumni"... Keep in touch with us at SJPxxx. I would have preferred to read "To Our Dear Mater Christi Alumni" even though it went on to say ... Keep in touch with us at SJPxxx. After all, I am an alumna of Mater Christi not St John's Prep.

Sitting in a hospital room at Queens General reading about this letter,
JUST IGNORE IT!
I saw a lettter before from Saint John's about a reunion this spring for different classes.
Assumimg this is the same letter everyone else is talking about,
I didn't graduate from there during the time period they mentioned.
So I deleted it and moved on to other things.
If anyone wants to contact me,
I'm in (I think) room 562 since after the Feast of Christ the King.

I can understand that receiving a letter from St. John's Prep is rather odd and my first reaction was unfavorable as, like allot of you, I graduated from Mater Christi as well.
In thinking about it however, I can understand St. John's desire to expand their potential donor list. Although many of us no longer live in Queens, the reality is that many of the Catholic Schools are in poor financial shape. The school is still educating middle and lower middle class children as Mater Christi did and would still be doing if it remained financially viable.
Perhaps we should see this from their perspective as well.

Yes I am in the hospital (Queens General).
Been here since 12/17 and likel will be here until well into January.
For the most part I'm fine and glad I never cancelled out
AOL dial-up service.
I think I'd be  totally out of my skull!

Ken: When I click on the above SJP link above, I do get the email link to SJP but when I click on the one on the email sent to me, I get AOL Profiles. I can't explain it. I don't know enough about computers to even try and figure it out.

I went to Mater Christi ..'74 and have taught at SJP since 1982. My first high school, Holy Cross Academy was closing in 1971, and so I came to MC after my first year at Holy Cross. Having gone through one school closing,I am not offended by the switch MC had to make. The MC name switch is certainly preferable to no school at all! In fact, Mater Christi was close to closing in 1975 and again in 1981 because of financial instability. I am happy that in 2009, this part of Queens has a great school. And just so you know, can put a face to them, and may take solace, the fact is that the school's development team is roundly and soundly represented by MC...Roseanne DeJoseph MC'75(early grad- with class of '74) and sister of Gloria, who was also an MC grad...Mrs. Mauren Flood faculty 1967-present vice-principal.
From what I have heard, it was Barbara Morris MC' 66(?), then a vice-president at St. John's University, who saw the writing on the wall back in late '70's ,1980...we were about to shut the doors on Crescent Street for good. Enrollment was approximately 1100, down from 3,000 in 1974. Yes, another Catholic school to close. Our alumni base and their contribution to MC at that time was nil. So, an affiliation with St. John's was struck and new life came into a dying institution. Loosely these are the facts.
WE are again facing very tough times. I think (and am thankful),many MC alumni see it is essentially the same school, serving the same neighborhoods, and always respond affirmatively when we call upon them. One big difference, perhaps the only difference on Crescent Street is that the current children do not get the hefty subsidies from the parishes and Diocese the majority of us educated at Mater Christi received. Instead of being the cheapest school, as was Mater Christi pre -1974, we are neck in neck with all the other Catholic schools.
WE have many of the same teachers, and our administrators are from MC. MC alumni children attend. Our school, unlike Bishop Reilly, has always welcomed and valued MC. Thankfully, the majority of the MC alumni have been so generous and positive. And thank God also forthe SJP alumni who have embraced us, and have been so very generous...Their generosity flows, though many of them feel it is not their school either (we do have Vincentians joining the MC family on our governing board!)
I hope one day, the few MC grads who cannot , do eventually put the switch behind. Maybe they can take a page from Brooklyn Prep alumni whose school closed in the early 1970's. They have no school to return to, but every year they gather en masse at the Brooklyn Marriot, celebrate the spirit of their closed school and raise money for another Catholic hs to which they have not even the slightest connection.
